A question I receive frequently by parents looking to enroll their child in some form of Martial Arts. My answer is that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is GREAT for toddlers! Besides the benefits of learning basic motor skills and coordination, it is a great way for them to start working on character development at a young age by learning to interact with other kids in an environment where discipline and respect are learned.
The biggest benefit I see is that kids learn to control their partners with takedowns and positions such as mount, side mount and back control where they can become very effective at controlling a larger opponent without having to resort to striking. This makes it very effective in terms of self defense without having to worry about them causing real physical harm to another tot who might’ve stolen their apple juice. LOL. Combined with the life skills they should be learning in the class, your child should be capable of not only defending themselves as well as becoming polite and respectful inside and outside of the dojo.
